PostSubject: pet store or streams?   Fri Jan 20, 2012 9:15 am

I've been wondering this lately, I see alot of different plant types at pet stores but I was wondering what kind of plants do fish like that I could collect myself? I'm going to be converting my 10gal from its current chess theme(lol) to a more natural theme since I'll be getting more natives. So basically I am just wondering what plants types and species should I be looking for? And what types of streams or rivers can I find them in.

Their are many native plants. I find more in smaller streams or ditches. You can easily find duckweed, ludwigia, creeping jenny, several myriopyllum species, and several Potamogeton species. These are all found in NW Ohio. Their are others but some aren't as common and others are harder to keep alive.

Thank you very much, I'll keep all this in mind lol, I can't really start doing anything until spring rolls around, sucks because I really want to start my native tanks

on a random note- some of those native plants are edible. it may not be your thing, but I always like to know which plants are edible up here because there's a serious possibility, due to my outdoor adventures, that I may have to use that local knowledge. improving your knowledge base of the local aquaculture is never a bad idea. can't wait til the breakup happens so I can get back out in the bush to do some fish collecting and have me some duckweed salad and salmon on a spit stuffed with local berries.

An odd note but thank you lol, I have had times where knowledge like that would have been helpful and hey if I'm out collecting and what not might as well give it a try, I'm normally pretty open to stuff like that lol
